Topic: Budget Bus George

This is Budget Bus driver George Oughton in the car park at Totteridge & Whetstone station on 3 August 1974.

He drove me all the way to Delhi, and taught me a lot. I remain grateful to him.

Re: Budget Bus George

I should have mentioned that credit for the photo goes to Joe Edouard.

Joe was a Mauritian in his 70s who travelled on George's bus all the way to Delhi in 1974 (via Lebanon and Kashmir) and who passed away a couple of years later.

He had a habit of scribbling details in felt pen on the front of his printed photographs, and it took me ages to Photoshop this one into shape. It was sent to me by his daughter Marie.

George Oughton was quite a character - he got a mention in Rory MacLean's book Magic Bus - and while he could be brusque at times I learned a lot from him and he earned my lasting respect.

Re: Budget Bus George

In other news, I just wrote a piece on The Overland:

https://www.richardgregory.org.uk/history/overland.htm

It is largely derived from old posts on this forum.

Corrections from those who know better are welcome - my own field of expertise is the Hippie Trail, which is a different subject altogether, but I did have friends in the 1970s who drove buses to India (a couple of BMC FGs and one full-size coach) so there is some crossover.

My thanks to Derek, Cindy and all contributors here.
